SOCCER is gaining acceptance as the national sport. Major sport competition exists in
VOLLYBALL, TENNIS, TRACK and FIELD, BOXING and SWIMMING. CHESS is also popular.
People of rural areas play GABATA, a BOARD GAME, somewhat like Backgammon, in which
pebbles are dropped in holes. Adult rural sports include Genna, a type of hocky and gucks,
which is a spear-throwing game of jousting, played on horseback. Horse racing is also
popular in the rural areas.
In Ethiopia everyone is part of a community, and people are always meeting for coffee and
a chat.
