Child Birth Practices

After the Christian birth, the woman is blessed with holy water. She is then expected to recuperate for 40 days, with family and servants looking after her. Baptism of the babies is based on a Levite practice whereby girls are baptised 80 days after birth and boys, 40 days after birth. Muslims celebrate seven days after the birth with a 'naming day' and again after 14 days there will be another celebration. She is also expected to have a long period of rest after childbirth.
